Many runners are raising money for the fatherless as they train for this big race. See the following announcement from OCA about the upcoming opportunities to serve!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;God is doing so much within Orphan Care Alliance (OCA) we just wanted to take a couple of minutes to let you know of some opportunities for your congregation to serve within our community. If you would please pass this information along to those in your congregation, we would be so very appreciative!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Join OCA At The Derby Festival Marathon / Mini-Marathon&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The race is sold out, but there are still plenty of ways to support the OCA around the Derby Festival. You can give your time before the race, you can volunteer on race day and you can support those brave souls who are running to raise money for the fatherless.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Before the race: The OCA will have a table at the Expo, where runners come to sign up. The hours are Thursday April 28 from 11-7 and Friday the 29th from 11-9. Set up is Thursday morning from 9-11. Everything must be out on Friday night. It is at the International Expo Center downtown. Volunteers are needed in 1, 2 or 3 hour slots, so please contact Lisa Twyman (twymanm@bellsouth.net) for more information or to volunteer.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;On race day: The OCA will be handing out water at the race and will have a small booth for runners at the finish line. On April 30th, we’ll need all volunteers in place by 8:00 AM. It contains unfortunate news for families adopting from Ethiopia, but you can try to make a difference by signing a petition for them.  Please read below.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;-----------------------------------------------------------&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As many of you know, Joint Council recently released a Statement regarding the announcement by the Ethiopian Ministry of Women’s, Children’s and Youth Affairs plan to reduce intercountry adoption by 90%.  The Statement can be found on their blog by clicking &lt;a href="http://betheanswerforchildren.wordpress.com/2011/03/07/ethiopia/"&gt;here&lt;/a&gt;. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you have not yet signed this petition for Ethiopia – Please consider doing so.  The Joint Council is involved with trying to help find a solution for what is going on in Ethiopia.  Details are still “sketchy” but you can help by signing this petition…almost 9000 have signed it so far…&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.gopetition.com/petition/43714.html"&gt;http://www.gopetition.com/petition/43714.html&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Please be in prayer for the many families affected by this new statement. Read his amazing story below.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;_______________________________________________________________________&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;by Lonnie Clouse&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt;Congrats to NASCAR driver and Back2Back supporter, Trevor Bayne on winning the Daytona 500 on Sunday, the youngest driver ever to win the sport's biggest race! Bayne has served with Back2Back in Monterrey, Mexico and pledged to donate portions of his Daytona 500 prize money to Back2Back’s orphan care work in Mexico. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Ya91sWaKwKQ/TWVa3_m0nbI/AAAAAAAAAGE/E8qw18qjO_I/s1600/2-21-11-daytona-500-winner.jpg"&gt;&lt;img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 213px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Ya91sWaKwKQ/TWVa3_m0nbI/AAAAAAAAAGE/E8qw18qjO_I/s320/2-21-11-daytona-500-winner.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5576963631581797810" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Bayne commented, “Hopefully this money will help us get some more races, and there are a lot of foundations and ministries that need support. Back2Back Ministries in Mexico is one, and there are a lot of good organizations that need some help, and we will help them out as much as we can.”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I met Trevor Bayne while serving as the lead chaplain to the NASCAR Nationwide Series with Motor Racing Outreach (MRO).  I started a small group Bible study at the race track and we met every Saturday before the race.  Trevor, Michael McDowell, Justin Allgaier and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. were the nucleus of our study. Trevor was also faithful to attend our weekly MRO chapel services.  It was evident from the moment that I met Trevor that he was a young man that was not ashamed of his walk with Jesus Christ.  I would occasionally have him read the Scripture at the start of our chapel services or open in prayer.  Trevor was bound and determined to share the story of Christ’s love any chance he had the opportunity.  He would take advantage of every speaking opportunity that was offered to him and he also wore a cross around his neck and even a big belt buckle with a cross on it.  He would also flood his Facebook and Twitter with Bible verses that the Lord was using in his life at the time.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;God put a passion in my heart to leave MRO and come serve alongside of Back2Back in helping provide “care for today and hope for tomorrow” for the orphan.  God used the book by Crazy Love by Francis Chan to help nudge me in that direction.  That also happened to be the book that we used for our weekly Bible study small group.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;At the conclusion of one of our small group Bible studies, Michael McDowell came up to me and said “Lonnie, I have a special surprise for you at the California race.”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Well, none other than Francis Chan showed up at the race and Francis even concluded our chapel service in prayer and hung out with the Bible study group before the race started.  Trevor had a blast hanging out with Francis.  Francis even joined me in prayer at Trevor’s car before the start of the race.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Michael McDowell is a strong follower of Christ and God has really used him as a leader in the lives of the younger drivers in the Nationwide Series. Michael and Jami McDowell are powerful advocates for the orphan in the sport of NASCAR and they are currently adopting a young child from the country of Ethiopia.  Michael called me to ask if he could come to Monterrey to see the ministry of Back2Back firsthand.  Michael talked Trevor into coming alongside of him for their week of service in Monterrey and Trevor fell in love with Back2Back and the orphans of Monterrey.  Trevor was not afraid to get his hands dirty.  He worked on several construction projects such as fixing a broken gas line at one of the children’s homes (orphanages) and he also played soccer and loved on the orphans.  We showed up at one orphanage and the pantry was empty.  We drove down to the local grocery store with the caregiver and Trevor purchased an abundance of food for the kids.  Trevor’s face was beaming the whole time that we were in store and there was no doubt that was working in Trevor and also using him in the lives of these kids.  Trevor and Michael spoke about being racecar drivers for a few minutes to the kids and they signed hordes of their autograph cards for the children and adults.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;At the conclusion of the trip to Monterrey, Trevor asked me when he could return to help serve the orphan.  I mentioned that he had an open invitation and he was welcome anytime! Since then I have stayed in contact with Trevor and he has written a foreword for the Back2Back director, Beth Guckenberger’s new book (Relentless Hope, Standard Publishing) that will be released in April.  Two days before the Daytona 500 Trevor texted me to ask me to pray that he would be able to handle the highs and lows of the sport.  Little did he know that his name would be written in the history books forever when he won the Daytona 500 on Sunday February 20th.  At the completion of the race I listened attentively to Trevor’s post race interview in Victory Lane.  Trevor did not take any credit but, instead he used the platform that God had given him to share about his love for Christ and passion for the orphan.  As his former chaplain it did my heart well to hear him sum up Gods two greatest commands on the biggest stage of his life with millions of people watching: love God and love others!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Trevor took a moment to call me after his win from the media center in Daytona.  I had the privilege to pray with him and he in tears recognized that his win was not about himself but all about Jesus Christ! Thought I would share!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Monday, January 17th, 2011&lt;br /&gt;Beads, braids, and baseball&lt;br /&gt;http://noelpiper.com/2011/01/17/beads-braids-and-baseball/&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;On this birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, here’s a true story from early in our years of being a multiracial family.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I spread a shabby, faded quilt on the grass beside the baseball diamond, waiting for our son’s game to begin. One-and-a-half-year-old Talitha and I were in jeans and jackets because the day was cool and windy. She was wearing her big brother’s baseball cap and it kept slipping down over her eyes.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When Talitha spotted three little blond girls nearby – about four or five years old – she toddled toward them, hopefully holding out her big purple ball, an invitation to play. They glanced at her, and turned back to their make-believe, ignoring her.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I sat still, puzzled. I had never seen anything like this happen to Talitha. Little girls usually would try to get her attention and beg her to play with them. She hovered near these girls, too young to realize she was being snubbed, and enjoyed watching them play. They continued as if she weren’t there.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;What does a parent think when her child is rejected? Talitha might be oblivious now, but that wouldn’t last many more months. Why did those girls treat her as if she were invisible? Only a few possibilities came to my mind. “Is it because they’re good friends with each other and don’t know how to let a new person into their circle? Is it because she’s so much younger and doesn’t know how to play their game? Or is it because she’s black?”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;After about ten minutes, a gust of wind cleared away my fog of perplexity when it blew off her oversized baseball cap, uncovering her beads and braids. I heard one of the children squeal, “She’s a girl!” Another picked up the big purple ball from the ground and they began to play a rolling game with her.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Later, as I watched them teaching her how to somersault, I realized that the cold spring breeze had uncovered something besides a little girl’s hairdo – it had revealed my inclination to sift the actions and attitudes of other people through the sieve of my own sensitivity and expectations. I was so tuned to find racial prejudice that I thought I’d found it. How else, I had thought, could I explain their treatment of Talitha? The real “prejudice” of those little girls – against little boys – had never occurred to me.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In the first months after we adopted Talitha into our white family, my radar for detecting reactions around us was extremely sensitive. I remember some times when people watched us intently, and I thought I read disapproval of our mixed-race family. But then they might say, “What a beautiful baby!” And I would turn off my radar and realize that sometimes I myself stare at families, enjoying the sight of their beautiful babies.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The 19th-century English preacher, Charles Spurgeon, said, “Avoid with your whole soul that spirit of suspicion which sours some men’s lives, and to all things from which you might harshly draw an unkind inference turn a blind eye and a deaf ear” (Lectures to My Students, Zondervan Publishers, p. 325). If my antenna is always circling to detect prejudice in the way people treat my family, my radar screen will be covered with blips.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;James 1:19 reminds me that “everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry.” If I am quick to listen, perhaps I will hear more clearly what a person really means. If I am slow to speak, I won’t react instantaneously with wrong assumptions about another person’s intentions. Each of the three courses focuses on a different issue relevant to parenting a child who experienced a tough start to life - abuse, neglect, life in an orphanage, malnutrition (either in utero or postnatal), chronic stress (either in utero or postnatal), or prenatal substance exposure. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The first one-hour course, "Tough Starts: Brain Development Matters," teaches parents about the ways that trauma/tough starts impact a child's brain development.&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt;The second one-hour course, "Tough Starts: Treatment Matters," focuses on those challenges that should prompt parents to seek professional help for their child and how to select an adoption-competent and trauma-informed therapist. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The third course, "Tough Starts: Parenting Matters," is two hours and addresses the challenges from their child's background that will impact the way that parents should approach parenting.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Each course costs $25, or $60 if all three are purchased together. Highview will be hosting a panel featuring the true adoption experts themselves: four adults who were adopted as children and have now grown into adulthood. Come hear firsthand how they feel about growing up adopted, about tackling issues such as identity, loss, abandonment, transracial concerns, navigating sibling and other family relationships, how their perspective about adoption has grown and changed over the years, and ultimately, how their faith in Christ has shaped who they are. While we knew and had faith in our hearts that God would provide, we often let our minds dominate with uncertainty. Praise God!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Through prayerful conversations with the Lord, we quickly realized that He has provided a way for us to aid others in their adoption journeys. As an adoptive mother and an Independent Distributor for Premier Designs jewelry, I and my husband felt led to offer fund raising through this Christian based, mission supporting business. For anyone who has a jewelry show fund raiser, 100% of all profit will be donated to the adoptive family. Some of you have just begun the adoption process. I want you to know that you are invited! This will be a great opportunity for all our families to get to know one another, for our children to see other families that look like ours, or for you to hang out with trans-racial families to see if you feel like the Lord might be calling you!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It will be so much fun! But every truly great story ever written is filled with both.  We began the adoption journey like many couples do, confused and wanting info.  Scott works in a ministry where orphan care is a big priority and so adoption had been on his heart for a long time.  I, on the other hand, was a little more opposed to the idea.  Not that I didn't want to adopt, but I was thinking that adoption was  "further down the road" for us -- like when we had several kids "of our own" and money in the bank.  You see, we had recently gone through two miscarriages -- a devastating experience, and then had been able to carry a child to term.  Our daughter Kilee was 2 years old and I was thinking that more biological children was the logical next step.  After all, we had figured this pregnancy thing out and we should keep going with it!  Scott encouraged me to keep an open mind and heart toward what God might be leading our family to do.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In recent years, our church has really caught on to God's heart for the orphan and had been offering some classes about "Considering Adoption."  The class was being led by some dear friends of ours and Scott suggested that we attend.  Reluctantly I agreed.  After a few classes, God really began to change my heart about adoption.  I was holding on SO tightly to my ideas and plans, that I was completely ignoring my husband's leading and the Lord's gentle urging to follow Him.  It wasn't so much about whether adoption was a good thing or not, it was about whether or not I trusted God with the future.  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It's not that adopting a child is God's plan for every family (though orphan care is, but we'll save that one for another time), but as Scott and I attended the class, we were starting to discern together that adoption was the plan for OUR family.  Our hearts began to feel heavy with a desire to adopt based on God's great love for us. After all, it didn't matter to God whether we were white, black, young, old, cute or rough around the edges - He grafted us into His family through Christ. I was time for us to act.  Now as I mentioned earlier, Scott is in the ministry and I am a stay at home mom, so I needn't mention the extent of our lack of "financial fitness" to complete an adoption.  Once we completed our homestudy, we began navigating the process of choosing an agency.  We were initially thinking we would adopt internationally, but doors seemed to keep opening for a domestic adoption.  Soon we were contacted by our social worker about an agency that had several minority birthmothers giving birth in the next several months but no adoptive family profiles for them to choose from.  We were so excited about this opportunity, but then we were told the agency's adoption fee.  It seemed insurmountable -- $20,000.  We were heartbroken.  How could we raise this amount of money?  We applied to Lifesong for a matching grant.  We prayed and asked a few friends to pray as well.  One evening as we were going to bed, we received a call from our church's adoption minister.  Our jaws dropped as we heard her say that over $12,000 had been anonymously donated to our adoption and was being placed in our Lifesong account.  The next day we found out that we had received a Lifesong matching grant.  We fell on our faces before the Lord, repented of our faithlessness and applied with the agency that very day.  God was completely providing for this precious child He was about to give us.  But the faith journey was not over yet.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The next several months were an emotional rollercoaster.  We were quickly chosen by a birthmother to adopt her precious biracial son who was due to be born 4 months thereafter.  We waited and prepared with joyous anticipation.  Everything was coming together.  One day, close to the baby's due date we received a call.  The baby had been born and . . . the birthmother was going to keep him.  We were devastated.  It felt like a miscarriage all over again.  We took some time to grieve the loss of this little boy, but then we decided to jump back in.  We were not going to give up.  After all, Satan did not want these little babies in believing families and we needed to stand strong in the Lord and complete the process with His help.  It was a spiritual battle.  We prayed specifically that the Lord would bring us a baby soon.  We didn't know how soon.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Two months later on a beautiful September morning, I was at a Mom's Bible study at church and Scott received a call at work.  We had been chosen by a birthmother.  He called me at church and told me, "Monica, we've been chosen.  And he's already born.  We need to review the case and get to the hospital now!"  My legs went to jelly as I hung up the phone and told my small group the news.  Our church was filled with the sounds of squealing moms that had walked the entire adoption journey with us.  I made arrangements for Kilee and ran to the car, all to the chants of the moms in the parking lot yelling, "Go, Momma, Go!"  I can't help but cry as I type this.  The body of Christ is a beautiful thing.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;After spending some time with our son's precious birthmom, Scott and I walked into the hospital room with a nurse and our agency representative.  And there was the most beautiful baby boy we had ever seen.  He had dark skin and jet black hair which we later learned stemmed from his beautifully rich ethnic heritage. The nurse handed him over to us and we bawled and praised Jesus as we kissed his sweet face.  Here he was, OUR son.  As we held him in that cold hospital room it hit us with the full force of God's revelation.  We're him.  God adopted us, in a helpless, hopeless state and grafted us into his family tree.  Just as this little boy would receive a family, an inheritance and a new name through adoption -- so did we through Christ.  The gospel is so beautiful.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Josiah Scott is now a happy, healthy 11-month-old who loves to romp and play with his sister, hug on his mama, and wrestle with his daddy!  We are continually reminded of Josiah's beautiful story and how God grew us as we followed Him.  We want to adopt again someday!  We are so thankful to all of the donors that helped make it financially possible to bring Josiah home. With the donations we are hoping to supply a light breakfast of donuts, muffins, and fruit with napkins and small plates to serve 60 people.  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We have some donated prizes for the event but are also looking to buy a few gift cards as a raffle. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If your church, bible study group, or individuals are interested in donating, please contact Britt Washausen at brwash@insightbb.com&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;----------------------------------------------------------------------------------&lt;br /&gt;Arise For Children Krispy Kreme Fundraiser - A family affair!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As many of you have heard, Arise for Children is in the process of opening an orphanage in Ethiopia, Love in Action (LIA).   Susan and her staff are very excited to see all the work the Lord has done to get this project started.  If you haven’t kept up with the Dallasburg Baptist Church mission team, you can see blog posts from their trip. (www.dburg.org)   They worked very hard all week to prepare the orphanage for children.    Even though I would LOVE to head to Ethiopia to help as well, that is just not possible right now.  HOWEVER, I can help in another way and so can you! &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I am putting together a Krispy Kreme fundraiser and all earnings will go toward LIA!   I would love for your family to participate.  I think this fundraiser has great potential to raise some money for LIA.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Here is how it works: &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;·         I will email out the Pre-Sell form and you will have about 10 days to sell the doughnuts.  You will just fill out the customer’s name and address along with the number of boxes AND COLLECT THEIR PAYMENT OF $6.50.  (same cost as at the store)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;·        Once the selling window is over, you will drop off the order form and money to the Arise office NO LATER THAN MONDAY, AUGUST 30.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;·        Our Doughnut Day will be Saturday, September 4.  On that day your customers can come to pick up their doughnuts in the Arise parking lot. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Just to let you know, Arise will make AT LEAST $3.25 a box on these, with the potential to make more!  The more you sell….the more ARISE makes!  My hope is to have at least 30 families participate.  Considering the families already home and families in process, this is doable.  The goal for each family is 10 boxes.  You could sell to your family, Sunday School class, neighbors, and friends.  These people have seen the joy of adoption first hand as they watched you walk this journey and will likely be willing to support orphan care.  And everybody loves a good doughnut!   If 30 families participate and reach the 10 box goal, we will make over $1,000 for LIA!!   &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I hope you share my excitement about helping LIA and the orphans still in Ethiopia. (BP)--The adoption agency Bethany Christian Services says interest from couples in adopting is significantly ahead of what it was last year, a trend that is being seen elsewhere and, adoption leaders say, is an example of a growing adoption movement among Christians.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_dbkHr119cpw/TEZ1pLvpaUI/AAAAAAAALcw/8NU9qb9FrI4/s1600/adopt.jpg"&gt;&lt;img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 300px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_dbkHr119cpw/TEZ1pLvpaUI/AAAAAAAALcw/8NU9qb9FrI4/s400/adopt.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5496209745639991618" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;International adoption placements through Bethany are up 66 percent this year compared to last year while inquiries about international adoption are up 95 percent, the agency reported July 19. Domestic infant adoption interest also is up: Applications are up 23 percent and home studies up 15 percent.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Representatives from Nighlight Christian Adoptions and Buckner International -- two Christian-based agencies -- say they, too, have seen an uptick in interest from couples wanting to adopt.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The increased interest comes as ministries and churches renew their focus on adoption. The Southern Baptist Pastors' Conference in June had a special emphasis on adoption and donated its offering "overage" to adoption scholarships for pastors and missionaries. Saddleback Church, where Rick Warren pastors, hosted a Forum on Orphans and Adoption in May, and the Christian Alliance for Orphans in April held its sixth annual Summit conference, an event that grows in popularity each year.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Ron Stoddart, executive director of Nightlight Christian Adoptions, said there's "no doubt" that there's a growing adoption movement among Christians. Nightlight -- which has offices in California, Colorado and South Carolina -- is a member of the National Christian Adoption Fellowship, which is comprised of nine adoption agencies and programs. All nine, he said, have seen an increased interest this year from couples wanting to adopt. In addition to an upswing in interest in international and domestic adoption, Nightlight also has seen in increase in interest in its embryo adoption program, in which couples adopt donated frozen embryos. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;"I think the reason for the upswing in the number of home studies that are being done and the number of families that are applying is because of this increased awareness within the church of the need to take care of kids," Stoddart told Baptist Press. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Estimates of the number of orphans worldwide varies wildly, although all stats put the number in the millions. Southern Baptist Theological Seminary's Russell D. Moore and his wife Maria adopted two boys from a Russian orphanage. He has since written a book about adoption, "Adopted for Life," and he often speaks to groups on the subject.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;"The Spirit of Christ is on the move among evangelicals, and this is just the beginning," Moore, dean of the seminary's school of theology, told BP. "... [M]any Christians are awakening to the radical nature of the Gospel itself. We, the Gospel says, were adopted. This reality tears down any artificial notion that adoption is some kind of 'less than' or 'Plan B' family. Christians are also waking up to what Jesus and His brother James define as pure religion: the care of the least of these, the orphans and widows."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Other factors are at work, Moore said. Christians have seen "the plague of fatherlessness" and been convicted to make a difference. There's also a multiplying effect: As couples adopt, their friends see that adoption isn't so "strange" and they, too, begin to "pray and ask God if this is where He's leading them," Moore said. Pastors also are leading the way, he said. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;"Pastors are starting to preach the whole counsel of God about the Father's love for the orphan, and calling churches to support the effort in all sorts of ways. Not every Christian is called to adopt, but every Christian is called to care for widows and orphans," Moore said, pointing to James 1:27. "I literally do not go five minutes these days without hearing from at least one family, via e-mail or social media, who testify that God has called them to adopt."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Kevin Ezell, who served as the president of this year's Pastors' Conference, has seen firsthand that pastors are taking action. He expected around 70 Southern Baptist pastors and missionaries would apply for the adoption scholarships; however, 140 did so.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;"I've never been more proud of SBC pastors than the last month," Ezell, pastor of Highview Baptist Church in Louisville, Ky., told Baptist Press.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Ezell learned of one pastor's family who was adopting a child with spina bifida and another pastor's family who was adopting twins with Down syndrome.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;"The stories are incredible," Ezell said.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Although the funds were limited for the scholarships, Ezell is trying to find enough money to cover everyone who is eligible. Church members who see their pastor adopting a child will be more likely to do the same, said Ezell, whose family has adopted three children.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;"If a pastor does it, it changes the atmosphere of the church," he said.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Buckner International, which places children in families through domestic and international adoption, also has seen an increase in inquiries and applications this year, said Debbie Wynne, director of Buckner Adoption and Maternity Services. She credits much of it to churches adding adoption, foster care and orphan ministries. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;"There is a grassroots movement of churches building these advocacy ministries to support and inspire their church members to actively help 'the least of these,'" Wynne said.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The Haiti earthquake also impacted couples. Buckner's international adoption program received more than 3,800 inquiries in January and February about adopting children from the country, Wynne said.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Bethany Christian Services said the Haiti disaster had a big impact in demonstrating to Christians the plight of orphans.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;"The figures Bethany released show strong improvement as we confront the global orphan crisis, but the need still remains as there are still an incredible number of orphaned children who wait for their 'forever family,’" Bill Blacquiere, president and CEO of Bethany Christian Services, said in a statement. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Stoddart, of Nightlight Christian Adoptions, said despite the positive increase in interest, some children -- older ones and minorities, for instance -- remain the toughest to place into families. The outlook is not good for an orphan from a foreign country who never finds a home.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;"That still is a great need," Stoddart said. "With those kids, if they're not adopted, we know what happens when they age out of the orphanage. They become victims of one sort or another. The girls get into prostitution and the boys into petty street crime and drugs. The number of kids who commit suicide is staggering. Here in the United States we have kids that have problems during their teen years and rebel, but there still is that family that is there as a safety net. When you get out of an orphanage at age 17 or 18, there is no family."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;em&gt;Michael Foust is an assistant editor of Baptist Press. We got pregnant after a few months and everything seemed to be ok. In January of 2002, at 13 weeks, we miscarried. After this miscarriage I went through a period of depression. I was angry with God, but learned to cling to His Psalms. I carried scraps of paper in my pockets with a verse from Psalms written out, so that I would be reminded of those thoughts during the day, when I began to feel depressed.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_dbkHr119cpw/TEWmAOb8ejI/AAAAAAAALcQ/9-xzWW4BWtk/s1600/_MG_4246+copy.jpg"&gt;&lt;img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_dbkHr119cpw/TEWmAOb8ejI/AAAAAAAALcQ/9-xzWW4BWtk/s400/_MG_4246+copy.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5495981443081075250" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We continued to try to have a baby and had two more miscarriages.  At this point we knew that something had to change. We were clearly not going to have babies the traditional way. So we decided to seek the advice of a fertility specialist. In the mean time, I also began to research adoption, but Greg wasn’t ready to consider adoption.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;God used some amazing circumstances, friends and Steven Curtis Chapman’s ministry to prepare our hearts for adoption.  We even had someone ask us to adopt a baby boy out of the blue.  That didn’t happen but it all worked together to prepare the way.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Even though we had now come to the realization that adoption was and always had been God’s plan for us, Greg still needed more time to grieve the loss of our children and come to terms with his fears of adoption. We took a vacation to South Africa and during that time Greg read a book called “Adoption After Infertility”. The book put into words all the things that he had been thinking and feeling, but was unable to express for himself. This book, some much needed time away, and a lot of prayer really helped us with our final decision. We received a picture of our beautiful baby boy, Josiah TaeHyung, on Sept 13, 2004 and traveled to Korea the following March to bring him home. On March 21st, 2005 we boarded a plane for home with our son.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Two years after Josiah came home we started thinking about adopting again. We decided to adopt from Korea again since we were familiar with the process and felt it important for our children to share the same heritage. Many people asked us about the possibility of getting a girl and I kept telling them that short of a miracle I couldn't see that happening because girls just weren’t available at that time. Very unexpectedly we got a call from our social worker just 2 months after sending our paperwork to Korea. She wanted to know if we would consider reviewing the file of a little girl that was considered to have special needs. We went through all her medical information very carefully, had 2 doctors review her charts and had several friends and family members praying for guidance.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Clearly God was at work in this situation and on March 10, 2008 Naomi Yoojin joined her forever family.  Wow! It is not a difficult read in terms of the depth of the theory presented but it is a highly useful book for adoptive families.  A summary of the book follows:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;em&gt;Wounded Children, Healing Homes helps the reader to understand trauma and the impact it has on parenting a previously maltreated child.  Many parents and professionals do not have a clear understanding of exactly what complex trauma is and how it can play a significant role in a child’s development and behavior, sometimes even if that child was adopted as an infant. While many resources exist for learning about trauma and its impact on children, Schooler’s book shines in its ability to present the information in an easily accessible way. Please see below for new information/needs.&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt;This summer, the Louisville chapter of Healing the Children (HTC) will be bringing a sixteen-year-old Haitian girl to Louisville in order to receive surgery to correct a life-threatening heart condition. This young woman’s home was completely destroyed by the earthquake, and she has been living in the tent encampment of Carrefour in Port-au-Prince ever since. Her condition is deteriorating, and the surgery needed to save her life is not available in Haiti.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;HTC has already located a primary host family, but is in need to two or three other families who are able to provide transportation and other support when the host family has other obligations. In the next two or three weeks, Steve Diamond, Executive Director of HTC, and his team of Louisville physicians will be bringing a sixteen-year-old Haitian girl with life-threatening heart problems to Louisville for treatment. They need a homestay for her for at least two months, and perhaps as many as four months, and they need other homestay support volunteers who can back up or help the family when they must be away or need help getting her to appointments. We have quite a few newly interested families in hosting making a *possible* 21 kids to be traveling this time!! How exciting!!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Please expect children to arrive between June 25- July 1.&lt;br /&gt;The hosting is planned for 6 weeks.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We are moving forward with accepting applications for families interested in hosting throughout the country, regardless of additional host families in their area. The Ukrainian authorities may be concerned about approving such situations, but we are working to find ways to accommodate each family. We have appreciated your donations in the past so much!  If you could spread the word to family and friends, this would be a huge benefit.  Last year we raised over $2,000.  $200 of that amount was in 50 cent items so it really adds up!   We also had several pieces of very good condition furniture and that paid for a desperately needed new roof for a widow. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We are in need of typical garage sale items and would like to have them collected by June 6th. We all know the deal...a family in desperate need gets to go on a mega vacation while Ty &amp; the gang builds them a brand new, over-the-top house to meet all their needs!!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This &lt;a href="http://abc.go.com/shows/extreme-makeover-home-edition/episode-guide?page=1"&gt;past Sunday's episode&lt;/a&gt; was about a family in Texas that had adopted four children with special needs from Kazakhstan, so of course I was extra interested in the story. Barely 5 minutes into their story, I wished I could have notified ALL of you to watch! Mike and Katrina Carr are loving parents to four adopted children who were abandoned in Kazakhstan. Two of the children, Ryanne and Rina, were born with &lt;a href="http://www.amnioticbandsyndrome.com/"&gt;Amniotic Band Syndrome&lt;/a&gt; which caused many physical challenges. And Mike has been plagued with diabetes since he was a child. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Mike and Katrina have battled through their challenges to provide a loving home for their children. However, over $50,000 in repairs is needed and Mike was recently laid off from his job. Praise the Lord!! What I want you to take away from their story is that money is not all that is needed to make adoption happen. These burn scars, which are present on his head and face, chest, right arm, and right leg, will require surgical revision at a qualified burn treatment center. Walter lost at least some of the fingers on his right hand and at least some of the toes on his right foot, and the majority of his right ear. The placing agency is looking for a committed Christian family who will be able to spend four to five weeks in Uganda to complete the adoption. This is a child who needs a great deal of medical intervention, as well as the support and love that can only come through a family. But there are &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;waiting&lt;/span&gt; children in China, too.  Here is some interesting information about Chinese adoption from one of our adoption advocates that is definitely worth reading!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;The wait for a healthy child from China is now taking a &lt;/span&gt;&lt;u style="font-style: italic;"&gt;very&lt;/u&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt; long time but the wait for a special needs child is much shorter.  Perhaps people on this list can post how long their adoption took for a special needs child.   I have one friend who has waited 4 years for a healthy child and just got her beautiful referral! Paul and I have always planned on adopting, we were just unsure how and when that would take place. We were blessed with 3 biological children and soon were pregnant with number four. That day we decided to adopt from Ethiopia! The orignal plan was to adopt a little boy between 5-7 years old. We signed up with &lt;a href="http://www.ariseforchildren.org/"&gt;Arise for Children&lt;/a&gt; in Louisville and began filling out papers!! &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Soon after we decided we wanted to take in two children, an older boy and his younger sibling. Our dossier was in country in May of 2008, we received our referral in September of 2008 of two precious brothers. The boys were a bit younger than we had originally planned on, but God knew they were our boys! Yishake was 3 and Yohannis was 1!! &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We struggled with waiting patiently from December to March to pass court...our third try was successful! They have meshed with the rest of the family as if they were with us since birth.  It is amazing to see the impact they have made not only on our family but on so many other families that have heard their story or met them and have begun to consider adoption for themselves. Maybe twice a month if we get really lucky! Aside from the fact that we have five children, our sons range from the most fair-skinned, blonde-haired boys to an Ethiopian and our daughters are polar opposites with one as an All-American brunette and the other an Asian beauty with coal black hair and almond eyes. He had witnessed the plight of the orphan firsthand. God had moved in his heart in a tremendous way, and he came home from that trip ready to make a difference in the life of a child and in the life of our family through adoption. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;God directed our family in both of our adoptions. Our children were not tiny little babies when they entered our families. They were nearly seven and six when they became ours. They brought with them the clothes on their backs and stories from their pasts. God gave us an immense love for children that we had never even met. He united our family of five to a family of six, then seven in ways that we couldn't. Redeemed sinners are adopted as sons "through Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the kind intention of His will, to the praise and glory of His grace, which He freely bestowed on us in the Beloved."
